The glorious Piazza San Marco, known in English as St Mark’s Square, one of the most visited tourist sites in the world. The ‘Lion of Venice’ stood tall on a massive column in the foreground. Seen across the Square is San Giorgio Maggiore, a sixteenth-century Benedictine church. Gondolas lined the shores of the Grand Canal. A soft sunlight casts long shadows of buildings, lamp posts and people. The painting was rendered in multiple layers of paint using varied brush strokes to produce dynamic effect and movement.
